Late
Nights
Smoke
Ash
Time spent
together
Time spent
apart
Tiredness creeps in
every night
a wager is placed
on who is last
to hit the wall
Come morning
critique awaits.

Late Nights was created using a variety of mold making techniques. After first sculpting the original model in polymer clay, I became enthralled with the idea of skin being mounted for display. As I worked with the mold making process, I experimented with both casting and molding materials. In the end there were three different molds, made from different rubbers and silicones, using both a brush on a block pouring process. The casting materials were the most fun to play with. I discovered two part epoxy foam while working on a previous project, and was hooked on the fact I could make these sculptures squish. I dove into the chemical breakdowns, the differences between open and closed cell structures in foam, and I learned far more than I ever thought possible. The soft sculptures ripple just like skin after painting them with acrylic. As an ever growing installation, Late Nights has taken me far beyond its original model. A culmination of lessons, shared moments, and a deep pleasure for the experimentation of materials, mounted for all to see.
